Fifty strangers wake up in a dark room, and every two minutes the group must vote to kill one of their own. A single-location thriller that turns into a brutal referendum on who gets valued least.
7. The Vast of Night
A 1950s radio DJ and a switchboard operator start picking up a strange frequency the same night the whole town is at a basketball game. A love letter to old-time radio dressed up as a UFO thriller.

Two former minor-league baseball players wander a zombie-ravaged New England, and the film cares far more about the friction between them than the undead. Mood and silence over gore.
10. Fires on the Plain
A tubercular Japanese soldier wanders the Philippine jungle in the last days of World War II, past a starving army that's stopped pretending the war is winnable. Bleak in a way few war films dare to be.
