How the picks work
The "Surprise Me" ticket-pull is a straightforward random draw from the film database, filtered by whichever genre and age rating you've chosen. Each title comes with a short plot summary pulled from the OMDb API (the Open Movie Database), along with its year, certificate, and a poster where one's available. Ratings shown are OMDb's US certificate data rather than the official BBFC classification, so treat them as a rough steer rather than gospel — always check the actual certificate before watching with kids.
Nothing about the pick is personalised or based on tracking what you've watched before. It's a genuine random draw from the filtered pool every time, which means you'll sometimes get a film twice and sometimes get something you've never heard of. That's the point — it's meant to short-circuit decision fatigue, not replace your judgement about what you actually fancy watching.
Staff Picks and Hidden Gems
These two sections are hand-curated rather than randomly generated. The Projectionist's Picks are personal favourites — the kind of thing you'd get recommended by a friend who watches a lot of films, not an algorithm. Hidden Gems leans specifically into films that didn't get the audience they deserved on release: festival favourites, box-office flops, and word-of-mouth cult classics. Both lists get rotated periodically, so it's worth checking back.
Director of the Month
Once a month we put a single filmmaker in the spotlight — a short write-up of who they are and what makes their work worth seeking out, alongside a small hand-picked selection of their films in the same style as Staff Picks. It's meant as a gentle nudge to explore a director's back catalogue rather than just their most famous title. The photo is pulled live from Wikipedia; everything else is written by us.
Guess the Poster
A quick side game: a poster gets blurred, and you try to name the film in as few guesses as possible before the image sharpens. It pulls from the same film pool as the rest of the site and tracks your current and best streaks in your browser, purely for fun — nothing is saved anywhere beyond your own device.
Buying physical media
Streaming catalogues change constantly, and a film that's available today can vanish from every service next month. The "Buy It On Physical Media" section links out to Amazon and eBay listings for the currently featured title, as a reminder that DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs still exist and don't get pulled from a library without warning.
